Song Stories #2: “End of Exile”

The next Christmas Song Story features another song I wrote for the new record.  It’s called “End of Exile”.  The verse lyrics are a slight reworking of an old Christmas hymn entitled “The Maker of the Sun and Moon”.  Yep, I had never heard of it either.  I googled “Christmas hymns” and found the old stanzas… and loved them.  I still don’t even know the original melody.  I actually kept myself from hearing it altogether so that I would be fully freed up in my head to write a fresh one that I felt fit the grandeur of the theme.

Then I created the chorus:

Glorious miracle
Here is the end of exile
God the invisible
Is flooding the world with light

The concept of God rescuing His people from exile is a constant thread that weaves throughout the Scriptures.   The Bible is full of stories of how God, time and again, brought Israel back from various forms of slavery, captivity, and exile.  It is as if the entire ebb and flow of the Old Testament narrative is working toward a much greater rescue.

Through human sin, death has held humanity captive.  And not only humanity.  The bitter roots of exilic decay snaked their way through human hearts, across ocean floors, up mountains, past the sun, beyond constellations and nebulae, and into every part of God’s good creation.  At the arrival of the God-Man to Earth, the exile of the universe met its end.  The darkness has finally seen a great light.  Glorious miracle!

“Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up a Prophet like me from your brothers.  You shall listen to Him in whatever He tells you.’” - Acts 3:22

Hear “Our Deliverer” and “He’s Alive” on Myspace

I love fall. ¬†I especially love November. ¬†The mornings are crispy cool. ¬†The leaves do that really cool color change thing everywhere else but Southern Cali. ¬†My wife and I celebrate our anniversary in November. ¬†Our middle son Jadon was born in November. ¬†We eat things like oyster casserole atop cranberry studded turkey and green beans ¬†amongst kindly kin while expressing our deepest gratitude to our Savior for all He has done for us. ¬†Not to mention Christmas is closer. ¬†As if these weren’t enough reasons to love November… there is a great big new reason. ¬†November 24th, that’s two days before Thanksgiving, my new CD “Above the Sky” will be available for purchase. ¬†My Producer Pete Kipley and I have been working on these 12 songs for over a year now. ¬†So you can imagine how ridiculously awesome it feels for me to make this announcement to you!

Soooo, to celebrate the upcoming release, I’ve put TWO of my new songs up on my myspace¬†for your sneak previewing pleasure – “Our Deliverer” and “He’s Alive.” ¬†I would absolutely love for you to check them out! ¬†”Our Deliverer” is a simple song of praise that exalts the Rescuer of humanity. ¬†”He’s Alive” is a slight adaptation of the old hymn “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” by Samuel Medley and John Hatton hundreds of years ago. ¬†I took two stanzas from Samuel Medley’s timeless work and made them the verses of “He’s Alive”, then I wrote a brand new chorus that puts a big exclamation point on the main theme – we love and serve a Living God. ¬†Lift your eyes today everyone… Jesus is alive!

Talk to you soon,

- Evan

Evan Wickham - above the sky

Hi everyone!

So glad you’re here.  I’m really excited right now.  A fully reworked website has been launched to accompany the release of my new album “Above the Sky.”

My hope for this website is simple – that each page would lead you to the music, and the music would lead you to Jesus.  Here on my blog, I plan on posting regularly about things such as songwriting, theology, and the daily benefits of caffeine consumption.  The Lord has been working so much in my life lately, and I can’t wait to share it with you.  I’m very much looking forward to those conversations with you all.

One really cool thing I’d like to point out right now is the “songs” section of this site.  When the new CD “Above the Sky” is released, all the song lyrics will be available there for your downloading pleasure.   Most of them will have free lead sheets too.  But here’s the coolest part – instructional videos.  Right now you can click “songs” and find two videos that walk you through the songs “King Forever” and “Heavenlies.”  Underneath each video you can download the lyrics and lead sheets for the songs in each lesson.  I plan on adding to the “Instructional Video Series” over time.  Hey, by the time you’ve read this post I may even have some more stuff up for you.

So go ahead and click around the new site.  I’d love to hear your thoughts!
